Foot calluses: should you be worried and how to treat them gently

A callus appearing under your foot can sometimes cause more worry than necessary, and sometimes not enough. Here is how to tell the difference and take care of it without being too aggressive.

Callus care with an electric file

What exactly is a callus?

It is an area of skin that thickens in response to repeated pressure or friction, typically under the heel or the ball of the foot. It is actually a natural protective mechanism of the skin: it strengthens where it is most stressed. The problem is that beyond a certain point, this thickened skin becomes uncomfortable or even painful when walking.

A common callus or a warning sign?

In the vast majority of cases, a callus is completely benign. However, it deserves medical attention if it is accompanied by sharp pain, redness, or local heat, or if it appears in someone with diabetes or circulation issues: in these situations, reduced sensitivity can mask a more serious problem, such as an unnoticed wound.

How to soften them without being too aggressive

The temptation is often to want to remove everything at once with a blade or a corn shaver. This is precisely what should be avoided: the risk of cutting yourself is real, especially on a thick callus where you cannot always feel where the dead skin ends. A more progressive approach works better: a foot bath to soften the area, then gentle exfoliation, repeated over several sessions rather than all at once. A bladeless tool, such as an electric file, limits this risk while remaining effective over time. You will find a complete routine, including callus care, in our home pedicure guide.

When to consult a podiatrist

If the callus is painful, if it is accompanied by a wound, bleeding, or discoloration, or if you are diabetic, it is best to consult a professional before attempting treatment yourself. A podiatrist can also identify the mechanical cause (shoes, foot strike) to prevent the callus from coming back.
